Lucca, defined by its Renaissance walls, is big enough to interest any visitor yet small enough to charm
Lucca offers more and does so more easily because:
1.- It is flat and level - Lucca is particularly easy for walking, cycling and getting around generally as most of its streets are pedestrian only.
2.- Its Renaissance wall completely encircles the city - Lucca’s walls are its jewel in the crown, a beautiful linear park lined with a variety of mature trees and offering spectacular views of the surrounding hills and mountains.
3.- It has retained its charming character - so much remains from its glory years 800 years ago, virtually untouched yet adapted with care throughout the centuries.
4.- Tourism is welcomed, well catered for and vital to Lucca’s economy (but without the over-bearing crowds).
5.- Many locals live and work there so the city retains its true character - unlike many other Tuscan city centres.
6.- Its historic independence as ‘a City State’ gives Lucca a sense of uniqueness.
